Episode 21: An Ode to Personal Space

Episode 21 An Ode to Personal Space Diary Entry 5 Dear Reader, The fire had been put out a little over a week ago. The damage is bad, like, really bad. Half the town had burned, the forest partly too. A few of the hiking trails had gone up in flames, a bird hide as well – all of which need to be rebuilt. Some of our historic buildings are gone too, but luckily the fire never reached the library, but more on that later. Much money will be spent to restore it all, but I don’t even know if it would be worth it – what’s gone is gone. One the other hand, our town relies so heavily on tourism that we can’t afford to lose the business and will most probably rebuild anyway. People are quite morbid, and most have matched the dullness of ash with that of their expressions. A lot of houses had burnt also – luckily there were no human casualties. There were, however, a few injuries. The worst of which being a house that had collapsed on one of the firefighters, who was trying...

Episode 20: A Pause in Time

Image
Episode 20 A Pause in Time Metal shelves loom over Jennifer as she sits in the corner of the cabin, next to Enoch. The shelves are packed with cans, blankets, tents and other things, but nothing of comfort. Nothing personal. Jennifer pulls her legs up to her chest. She is trapped in a place without time, the place where eternity subsides, and thoughts are personified. She is trapped in the place where the past haunts the present and guilt lurks around each and every corner – Jennifer is trapped in Silence. Trapped within her own body, with her thoughts and memories, unable to speak aloud, but, rather, to forever hold her peace. She swallows hard and glances at Enoch. He hasn’t said a word since Jennifer arrived. All Enoch has done is stare out silently in front of him. “What happened?” Jennifer asks. “She left,” Enoch states simply. “She left. All I wanted to do was help.” Jennifer’s heart starts racing uncontrollably, “Ronita?” She asks, knowing the answer...

Episode 19: The Price of Secrecy

Image
Episode 19 The Price of Secrecy Tessa leans against Jennifer's shoulder, fast asleep. They are both tucked in under a blanket, sitting at the base of a large tree. The blanket was part of the emergency supplies that had been handed out to them. By the time the sun started setting, the fire still hadn't been put out. Not long after, the emergency supplies started making their way round; flashlights, tents (for the small children), blankets, lamps, and dried food of all sorts. “ I've only been in such a situation once before,” Jennifer says and looks around. Everyone else had slowly fallen asleep, but Jennifer couldn't seem to stop her busy mind. Here and there she catches sight of another person with their eyes wide open, it's good to know that she's not the only one. It's too easy to feel alone. “ I was no older than three and a fire had broken out. We were told to evacuate too. I remember falling asleep in my father’s arms, it was like camp...

Episode 18: Peeping Eyes

Image
Episode 18 Peeping Eyes Jennifer walks as fast as she can to the library door, she feels the urge to run, but the last thing she wants to do is get in trouble with Ms H. Outside, on the landing, Jennifer hastily looks up and down the street. Enoch should still be nearby. Spotting him, one street over, Jennifer trots down the stairs and quickly crosses the street. She follows at a comfortable distance, not losing sight of him, but she's also not close enough for him to spot her easily if he were to turn around. Jennifer opens her mouth, to start expressing her thoughts to her reader, but then quickly stops herself. She had not realized that the price she would have to pay for the secrecy would be silence. Swallowing her words, Jennifer starts pondering the situation internally as they turn out of the main road. The first thing to come to mind is the Author's Advocate. She ponders the new letter and then the previous one and thinks about the questions the Autho...

Episode 17: A Quest for Interesting

Image
Episode 17 A Quest for Interesting “ The air is cold and dry as Jennifer takes her usual route to the library,” Jennifer narrates, having taken it upon herself to tell her own story. Even though her life has grown slightly more interesting in the last few weeks, Jennifer was overcome by the sense of boring that morning. She had woken up feeling extraordinarily mundane and had no motivation to go to work... it had nothing to do with the work itself, but rather with the fact that Jennifer would be doing the exact same thing again. She can't imagine that someone would read a story where the main plot centred around the same daily events, chapter after chapter. Working at the library was interesting, at first, but now that it has become normal, Jennifer's fallen back into her former sense of dullness. “ The road was long, but not long enough for Jennifer to finish pondering the past's events. Events concerning Angus and Enoch and, finally, Tessa as well. A l...
